Moscow Oblast

Moscow Oblast (Russian: Моско́вская о́бласть) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast) officially established on January 14, 1929. It is the most populous Russian oblast (pop. 6,618,538 without Moscow as of 2002 All-Russian Population Census) while its area is small by Russian standards at 45,900 km², so it is the most densely populated regions in the country <ref>http://www.sci.aha.ru/ATL/ra13a.htm</ref>.
Moscow oblast is highly industrialized with its main industrial branches being metallurgy, oil refining, and mechanical engineering, food, energy and chemical industries.

Moscow oblast borders Tver Oblast (N), Yaroslavl Oblast (at one point NE), Vladimir Oblast (E), Ryazan Oblast (SE), Tula Oblast (S), Kaluga Oblast (SW) and Smolensk Oblast (W).
