The muʻumuʻu (more often spelled as muumuu or mumu) is a loose dress of Hawaiian origin that hangs from the shoulder. Like the Aloha shirt, muʻumuʻu exports are often brilliantly colored with floral patterns of generic Polynesian motifs. Muʻumuʻu for local Hawaiʻi residents are more subdued in tone, adorned with traditional Hawaiian quilt designs in muted colors. Muʻumuʻu are not as widely worn at work as the aloha shirt. Bell-shaped muʻumuʻu are also popular as maternity gowns because they do not restrict the waist. The Muumuu is also favoured by largely overweight people.
The word muʻumuʻu means cut-off or amputated, as the dress is derived from the holokÅ« in missing the train or yoke of the latter. Ultimately both of them are derived from Mother Hubbard (dress)
