Nabidh
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nabidh was an intoxicating beverage.
[edit] Umar
It is reported that Umar, the second Sunni Caliph, used it, described as a drink made from dates left to soak in water <ref name=Suyuti>History of the Caliphs by Suyuti [1]</ref>.
[edit] Ibn Fadlan
Ibn Fadlan states that it was drunken by the Vikings, according to the Muslim writer Ibn Fadlan <ref name=Buried>Taylor, Timothy. The Buried Soul, Beacon Press, 2002, p.175-176</ref>.
Brewed for ten days, nabidh was probably alcohol-based and may have included henbane, cannabis, and/or opium <ref name=Buried/>.
Fadlan describes the drink being given to a female slave who was sacrificed, by strangulation and stabbing, during a ship burial ceremony <ref name=Buried/>.
