Nanna (Norse deity)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nanna is a goddess in Norse mythology, the daughter of Nep and wife of Baldr. She and Baldr are both Æsir and live together in Breidablik in Asgard. With Baldr, she was the mother of Forseti. When Baldr was slain by Höðr, she was overcome with grief and threw herself onto her husband's funeral pyre on his ship Hringhorni.
In Danish chronicles, Nanna, Baldr and Höðr are described as human beings, who erroneously were considered gods by posterity. The chronicle which departs most from Norse mythology is the Danish Chronicon Lethrense (and the included Annales Lundenses). They tell that Höðr's son, the Danish king Rorik Slengeborre was succeeded by his son Wiglek. This Wiglek married Nanna, and he ruled in peace. He died in his bed and was succeeded by his son Wermund, the father of Offe (Offa).
