The Universidad Nacional de Colombia (National University of Colombia) is a public educational institution. Several campuses across the country conform to the university - the main campus is located in Bogotá; there are other campuses in Medellín, Manizales, Palmira, Arauca, Leticia, and San Andrés.
The main campus was designed by German architect Leopold Rother.
This University has a wide selection of programmes, such as medicine, nursery, dentistry, engineering, chemistry, mathematics, physics, social sciences, arts (music, fine arts) philosophy and law. It plans to become a real research institution; it is already the main educational institution of Colombia, in terms of size and geographic reach. This institution yields the greatest number of granted professional degrees per year in the country. Many alumni have done outstanding contributions in science, arts, economy, politics etc. Among others Fernando Botero,Manuel Elkin Patarroyo,Totó la Momposina,Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Camilo Torres studied there.
The University is also known for the continuing appealing of some of their students to left wing politics. Buildings in the campus are a common place for left wing slogans. There is a big painting of Che Guevara in the facade of the University's main auditorium (called "Leon de Greiff"). The square by the auditorium is commonly known as Plaza Che (Che Square), but its official name is Plaza Francisco de Paula Santander (Francisco de Paula Santander Square).
The Universidad Nacional has its own stadium, the "Alfonso López Pumarejo" where sometimes national championship's games Colombian Professional Soccer are held. The university has a radio station, 98.5 FM (U.N Radio) in Bogotá.
