Neon Sign Transformers are iron-cored line powered (120/240 volts) high voltage transformers produced mainly for the purpose of powering Neon Signs. They produce a wide range of voltages from 2kv in smaller models to 15kv in larger units. Currents are usually in the 20 - 120 milliamp range.

[edit] Uses

Besides the obvious purpose of powering neon signs, NST's are often used by hobbyists for:

  • Tesla coil power supplies - used in small to medium sized tesla coils as the main source of high voltage.
  • Jacobs Ladders - a device often pictured in older horror films pictured to the right.

[edit] Safety

  • Electrocution - NST's can be very dangerous and perhaps LETHAL if improperly used. At high voltages such as those present in NSTs, a current of 30ma is likely to cause defibrillation of the heart and could be lethal. THE HIGH VOLTAGE FROM AN NST MUST NEVER BE DISCHARGED INTO THE BODY.
  • UV Light - The ultraviolet light emitted from the high voltage electrical arc can be harmful to ones eyes. It is recommended that the arc be viewed through the appropriate welding goggles or at the very least a high quality pair of sunglasses.
  • Ozone - the production of ozone can be noticeable when running an NST for long periods of time. The buildup of ozone is not likely to be lethal but can cause dizziness and headaches if proper ventilation is not provided.
