New York Military Academy, or NYMA, was founded in 1889 by Charles Jefferson Wright, a Civil War veteran and former school teacher from New Hampshire who believed that a military structure provided the best environment for academic achievement, a philosophy to which the school still adheres. NYMA has a 117 year history as a college preparatory school with a military structure that enrolls students from the New York metropolitan area as well as around the country and the world.

Wright's successor, Sebastian Jones, presided over the Academy from 1894-1922, guiding it during its most critical period of growth from a young and small institution of 48 cadets, through a disastrous fire in 1910, and throughout an extensive reconstruction program. NYMA is now one of the oldest military schools in the United States. In 1975, the Academy became a coeducational institution, admitting women for the first time in the school's history.

Successive superintendents continued the groundwork laid by Wright and Jones in the early years with the construction of additional facilities, the expansion of the student body, and an emphasis on teaching the principles of leadership through the Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC). Through participation in JROTC, cadets develop character and leadership and learn that leadership is getting people to do things they don't necessarily want to do. A tenet of the school's leadership program is that "it is a privilege to lead."

It is the Academy's mission to develop cadets with academic, athletic, character and leadership skills that prepare them not only for college, but also for life as effective leaders and responsible citizens. Academic excellence is NYMA's highest priority and is achieved because of the structured, orderly and well-disciplined environment that the cadets help maintain.

With a Corps of Cadets (the student body) in grades 7-12, NYMA offers a comprehensive education on a personal level: cadets enjoy small classes (9: 1 student/teacher ratio), a devoted faculty and an education that is reinforced by a special mentoring program that keeps parents involved.

An intensive college placement program administered by NYMA's guidance department has ensured that in recent years, NYMA graduates have been accepted to some of the nation’s most selective schools including: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Boston College, Lehigh University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Southern California, the United States Military Academy, the United States Naval Academy, and the United States Air Force Academy.

The Academy is located in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York in the Hudson Highlands, at the foot of Storm King Mountain, and just above the Hudson River. It is approximately 60 miles north of New York City, or about one hour by car. This places NYMA in the Mid-Hudson Region of the Hudson Valley, which is easily accessible by airplane (KSWF, KEWR, KLGA, KJFK, or KALB) as well as train (Amtrak and Metro-North), bus, and automobile.

New York Military Academy graduates can be found leading major corporations in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Caracas, Venezuela; working for The Pentagon in Washington D.C., practicing anesthesiology in Grand Rapids, piloting commercial planes out of Atlanta, as restaurant owners in Tucson or racetrack owners in Florida, or running investment banks in Zürich, Switzerland.
