Ninja Sentai Kakuranger
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Image:Kakuranger-title.jpg Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (忍者戦隊カクレンジャー Ninja Sentai Kakurenjā?), translated into English as Ninja Squadron Kakuranger, was TOEI Company Limited's eighteenth production of the Super Sentai television series. Its footage was used in the third season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers miniseries. The name is a portmanteau of the words kakure (Japanese for "hidden") and "ranger", so the transliteration of the Japanese name can be either Kakuranger or Kakurenger.

[edit] Plot
400 years ago, the ninja and the Youkai had a great war. The legendary Sarutobi Sasuke and other four ninja sealed the Youkai Commander Nurarihyon and all his youkai's energies away in a cave protected by the "Seal Door". In the present, the only surviving youkai, Kappa, tricks Sarutobi Sasuke and Kirigakure Saizo's descendants, Saizou and Sasuke, into releasing the Youkai by opening the "Seal Door". Now these two, joined by three other descendants of great ninja, become the Kakuranger to fight the Youkai with the aid of the Three God Generals.

The Kakuranger's ancestors also appeared from the castle in the beginning of the series to give the Kakurangers their Doron Changers. Inside the castle is a stone altar of the God Generals, the source of the Generals voices.

The Beast Generals group attacks include the "Vacuum Hurricane" and "Big Bang". He is armed with the mighty Flaming Shogun Sword (火炎将軍剣 Kaen Shōgun Ken), which can defeat nearly any Youkai with its flaming blade and had a hilt which resembled a catfish. The sword can also be shrunk to human size for the Kakurangers to use in desperate situations. The "Shinobi" kanji medal on his chest can deflect certain youkai attacks. One of the Invincible Shogun's attacks is the Shogun Flower Spray (Shougun Hana Fubuki). Unlike most Sentai, where the Rangers pilot their mecha, the Kakurangers actually become the Beast Generals. Invincible Shogun's head resembles an origami crane. Invincible Shogun's power helped to power up GaoKing in Gaoranger vs. Super Sentai.

This bird first appeared to help the Rangers against Umibouzu. He was the only God General who did not talk vocally, most likely because it's an animal. It has a wingspan of 85.6 meters (almost as long as a football field).
- Super Stealth Beasts (超忍獣 Chō Ninjū) / Kakure DaiShogun (隠大将軍 Kakure Daishōgun, Hidden Great General): The last God General to be discovered, Kakure Daishogun is composed of the five Super Stealth Beasts formed from the "Five-God Combination" (五神合体 Goshin Gattai) command. After finding the Scrolls of Shinobi (Shinobi no Maki), which hold many of the Kakurangers' techniques and powers, the Kakurangers were able to call forth and pilot the mighty Super Stealth Beasts. These mighty creatures are called forth using the Scrolls of Shinobi and the command "Hidden Style Art of the Super Stealth Beasts" ("Kakureryū Chō Ninjū no Jutsu"). Although very powerful as separate fighting units, the Beasts can combine to become the last of the God Generals. Its weapons are its two arms. The right fist has the power of the monkey and the left has the power of the wolf. With the right arm it can perform the God Hammer Punch, and with the left arm it can perform the God Burst Chop. Learning this, NinjaRed manages to wound Daimaou (transfering the pain to Daradara) long enough to cancel out the siphoning process. - Bimbogami (49, 53): A youkai based off the Japanese god of poverty. He turned all of the Kakuranger's weapons into worthless garbage that were unable to harm him. He was wiped out by SamuraiMan, Invincible Shogun, and Kakure Daishogun. This creature, in Japanese mythology, is said to carry around a broken fan and haunts people after they suffer from great misfortunes.
- Onbu-Obake / Onbu-Gear (Ohranger vs. Kakuranger): A powerful Youkai that was sealed in a temple away from the other Youkai by the ancient Kakurangers. Buldont brought him in for a contest he and his father Bacchus-Rage were having to see who can kill the OhRangers first. In a duel with BaraGear, he piloted OHRanger Robo while BaraGear piloted OHBlocker. Onbu-Obake could enlarge himself to the size of the Robos without the use of lightning. Onbu-Obake was a pervert/rapist and had a fetish for young, pretty girls, whom he could/would abduct to take their souls with a few licks from his extendable tongue. His human guise is a clown and his powers include possession and absorption attacks. He also scared Ganmazin away by showing him his spiritual form. After Buldont and Bacchus made a truce, Onbu-Obake and BaraGear merged to form Onbu-Gear, who was soon destroyed by the Ohrangers' mecha. His name translates as "Piggyback Ghost".
[edit] Other Enemies
- Emperor Daidas (Super Sentai World): This planet-conquering tyrant came to Earth to add it to his empire, and sent Zaigan, Bango, and Damaru to the surface as part of the invasion process. After the three generals and their two youkai allies were killed by the Fivemen, the Jetmen, the ZyuRangers, the Dairangers, and the Kakurangers, Daidas swore vengeance. He gave the Five Robo, Jet Icarus, Daizyujin, Dairenoh, and Invincible Shogun a hard time as he was more powerful. But when a photographer (who, along with his girlfriend, witnessed Daidas' arrival) told the Rangers to hit Daidas' third eye of the left side, the Rangers themselves figured out that that area had to be his weak spot. Daidas himself was debilitated by a right hook from Invincible Shogun. Taking advantage, the other robos struck with one weapon from their respective arsenal (Jet Icarus used the Icarus Axe while the rest used their respective swords), and Invincible Shogun delivered the final blow with a slash from its own sword, defeating the tyrant once and for all.
- Zaigan, Bango, and Damaru (Super Sentai World): Daidas dispatched these three generals as part of his "Earth Invasion Plan". Zaigan was about to slay a photographer and his girlfriend, who witnessed Daidas' arrival (as the three generals had orders to slay anyone who learns of Daidas' invasion plans), when the Kakurangers came to the rescue. The tables were turned when two Youkai came with the two witnesses as hostages and forced the Kakurangers to surrender (before shooting at them). Zaigan was about to banish the Kakurangers to Hell when the Fivemen, the Jetmen, the Zyurangers, and the Dairangers shot at the enemy quintet (the hostages took advantage and fled). In his anger, Zaigan called forth the footsoldiers of the enemies of four of the Super Sentai (excluding the Kakurangers). The footsoldiers were easily disposed of. Damaru received a Red Slicer to his neck, Five Red and Red Hawk used their respective swords to defeat the two Youkai, Zaigan was debilitated by the Howling Cannon, Bango was sent hurtling in the air by the Dairenrods, and the quintet was killed off by the Kakuranger Ball.

[edit] Trivia
- Teruaki Ogawa, who played the role of Sasuke, later came back in the Super Sentai franchise in the role of Black Knight/Hyuuga from the 1998 Sentai series Seijuu Sentai Gingaman.
- Kane Kosugi is the son of Sho Kosugi, who starred in many films in America during the height of the ninja exploitation craze in Hollywood in the mid '80s. Kane is also set to play the role of Ryu Hayabusa in the film adaptation of the popular video game Dead or Alive.
- Sho Kosugi also had an appearance in Kakuranger episodes 29 & 30 as Gali, Jiraya's foster parent and sensei.
- The Oshioki Three Sailor Sisters is a reference to the 1993 Toei series Shushutorian, which starred Kakuranger regular Satomi Hirose. Two of her costars from the series, Kei Ishibashi and Noriko Tanaka, return as the two other "sisters."
- Hakamenrou was played by Takayuki Godai, who also acted as the second Vul Eagle in Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan.
- Sakura was played by Keiko Hayase, who also acted as Five Yellow in Chikyuu Sentai Fiveman.
- Jiro was played by Keisuke Tsuchiya, who also acted as Kirin Ranger in Gosei Sentai Dairanger and later played Shadow/Black Beet from the Metal Hero series Juukou B-Fighter. His brother was cast in that same series as Takuya Kai/Blue Beet.
- Shiro Izumi, who acted as Change Pegasus in Dengeki Sentai Changeman and as DragonRanger in Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger, had a guest appearance as the TV character "Otasuke Samurai" in episode 9.
- Rika Kishida, who acted as White Swan in Choujin Sentai Jetman, had a guest appearance as a reporter in episode 9.
- Reiko Chiba, who acted as PteraRanger in Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger, had a guest appearance as Reika in episode 25.
- Ninpuu Sentai Hurricanger, the second Super Sentai with a ninja-based theme, has a ranger that is very similar to NinjaMan in Shurikenger. Both have secondary modes that activate when angered (SamuraiMan for NinjaMan, and Fire Mode for Shurikenger), and both do not have human forms (although Shurikenger was once human and tends to find different human hosts for his power in each episode). It could be said that NinjaMan, in formula, is the predecessor to Shurikenger.
