The third elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly will be held on 7 March 2007. The Assembly elected in 2003 has never met, but following an agreement made in St Andrews on 13 October 2006, a transitional assembly came into effect on 24 November 2006. It will be dissolved on 30 January 2007, after which campaigning for the elections will begin.[1]
Candidates in the election are expected from the Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Féin, both of which will hope to increase their representation; from the Ulster Unionist Party and Social Democratic and Labour Party, both of which will hope to maintain their representation at close to current levels; and from various minor parties. Apart from the major parties already mentioned, other parties which won seats at the 2003 election are the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland, the Progressive Unionist Party and the UK Unionist Party.
