Northumbria University is located in Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England. It has a total student population of around 23,500 [1] and staff population of over 2,400 (as of December 2005) making it the largest University by student figures in the North of England.
The most recent Higher Education Quality Assurance Agency figures ranked Northumbria among the UK’s leading universities for teaching.
The University currently use the slogan "Great learning Great experience Great Future" to promote itself.
In 2005 the University was voted "The Best Modern University"

Northumbria’s completion rates are among the highest in the UK. The University has developed a reputation for designing courses with real skills for the job market in mind. As a result, 95% of Northumbria graduates are either employed or have entered further study or training within 6 months of graduating.

[edit] Location of Campuses
The University has two campuses. The main campus is located in the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as is known as the city campus, there is also a secondary campus loacted a few miles outside of Newcastle upon Tyne on Coach Lane, and is known as the Coach Lane Campus. The Coach Lane campus is home to School of Health, Community and Education Studies only, all others schools are located at the City Campus. A Shuttle Bus runs between the two campuses.
[edit] Campus Developments
The University is currently involved in a £100 million development project to improve and expand its city campus. This includes a new state-of-the-art seven acre site to be known as: City Campus East, adjacent to the main campus, which will house the Schools of Law, Design and the Newcastle Business School.
Improvements to the central City Campus West are also ongoing including a new footbridge linking the East and West Campuses across the central motorway, planned pedestrianisation and greening of the integrated teaching environment. The first phase of the expansion is due to be completed by September 2007.

Northumbria University has its origins in three regional colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, the College of Art & Industrial Design and the Municipal College of Commerce. An amalgamation of these three institutions formed the Newcastle Polytechnic in 1969, which became the major regional centre for the training of teachers with the incorporation of the City College of Education in 1974, and the Northern Counties College of Education in 1976. Northumbria was inaugurated as a university in 1992, under the name the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. The trading name was simplified to Northumbria University in 2002.

Famous alumni include musicians Sting and lead singer of the Lighthouse Family, Tunde Baiyewu; former athlete and television presenter Steve Cram, fashion designer Scott Henshall (currently appaearing the ITV reality show 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here'), the lead designer of the iMac and iPod, Jonathan Ive, and Alexei Mordashov, Russian business oligarch. George Askew from Big Brother 2006 now attends Northumbria University.
[edit] The Students Union
The Students' Union provides representation for all students studying at the University. It provides a range of student activities and several venues for students to socialise in a safe environment, chiefly at Bar One and Reds. It hosts a range of club nights, including the bi-weekly 'Rattled by the Rush' playing indie music, and also 'Get Y' Skates On' which caters for the alternative types. The monthly student newspaper is called Northumbria Student, which includes the popular entertainments section Poly Scene. The radio station, NSRfm, being shared with University of Newcastle Students' Union is broadcast over the Internet and on FM for part of the year.
