Notch

A notch is a small hole, gap or defect, which may be caused accidentally or deliberately. For example, an axe or other blade may become notched when it hits something harder. Notches are often used as a tally. Notch may also refer to a hole in a belt, and is used figuratively in expressions such as notch up (accumulate).
