Novgorod Oblast

Novgorod Oblast (Russian: Новгоро́дская о́бласть) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). It was established in 1944. It is located in the Northwestern Federal District, between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The administrative center is the city of Velikiy Novgorod.

The area of the oblast is 53,895 km². Novgorod Oblast borders Leningrad Oblast (NW,N), Vologda Oblast (E), Tver Oblast (SE,S) and Pskov Oblast (SW).
The western part is a lowland around the Lake Ilmen, while the eastern part is a highland (northern spurs of the Valdai Hills). The highest point is Mount Ryzhokha (296 m).

The oblast is the smallest in european part of Russia in terms of population: its population was 694,355 according to the 2002 Census, down from about 753,000 in 1989. One of the reasons for a relatively low population density is that the area heavily suffered during the World War II. The fraction of urban population is 70%. There are 10 cities and towns.
