Occult detective
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Occult detective stories are a sub-genre of the detective story. The main difference is that the occult detective is involved in cases involving ghosts, curses, and other supernatural elements.
The first occult detective stories to capture the public's imagination were Algernon Blackwood's Dr. Silence stories and William Hope Hodgson's Carnacki, the Ghost Finder. Though never large, this sub-genre grew to include such writers as Seabury Quinn, Manly Wade Wellman, and Jack Mann. More recently, the television series Kolchak: The Night Stalker and The X-Files have picked up these same themes. Other examples are John Constantine from the comic book series Hellblazer, and Constantine, a film inspired by the comic.
