The octave mandolin is an eight-stringed fretted string instrument tuned an octave below the Neapolitan mandolin. It may have a ribbed bowl-back, a flat or a carved back.

In Europe, it is known as an octave mandola.[citation needed]

The octave mandolin is closely related to the Irish bouzouki.
