Office of Police Integrity
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Office of Police Integrity is an independent authority designed to oversee the work of the Victoria Police in Victoria, Australia. Established in November 2004 to replace the disbanded Police Internal Affairs office, the office's stated aim is "to ensure that the highest ethical and professional standards are maintained in the Victoria Police Force and to ensure that police corruption and serious misconduct is detected, investigated and prevented." The Office is wholly separate from Victoria Police and its management.
In September 2006, a public inquiry by the office into the conduct of the disbanded Victoria Police Armed Offenders Squad - which investigated armed robberies and other like offences - led to the discovery of interviews where it was alleged that the investigating officers assaulted police suspects. In response to media coverage of the inquiry, the Police Association (police officers' union) called for the Office to be closed, claiming the inquiry had denied the officers natural justice and procedural fairness.<ref>The Age (2006).
