At King's Oliver was President of King's College London Conservative Society in which he made the then Shadow Minister for Education now Leader of the Opposition Rt. Hon David Cameron MP and Rt. Hon Ed Vaizey MP Shadow Minister for Arts as Hon. Presidents of the Society and in turn Oliver took the membership to new heights of success. In October 2005 Oliver also organised the first inter-London University Conservative debate which saw Francis Maude in the Chair; at the meeting Oliver stated that: "The Conservative Party needs to be re-branded" and "as a party we must show we have shared values and shared concerns, and in turn we need to learn lessons of the past, live for the present and look to the future".
Oliver is the author of the books The Rose and the Swastika (2001) discussing the German airship Hindenburg's visits to Yorkshire in May and June 1936, the book became highly popular and was published to critical acclaim in December 2003 and following Oliver was interviewed and appeared in the April 2004 edition of BBC History (magazine), the book also saw Oliver giving lectures across the UK on the subject. Oliver's second book Appeasing Times: Geoffrey Dawson, The Times and the Appeasement of Nazi Germany 1936-1940 (2006) is a critical account of how the media tried to manipulate public opinion in order to support an accord with Nazi Germany; Oliver uncovered new evidence to suggest that the Appeasers were not only pro-German in their approach but pro-Nazi in which Oliver states their is a discernable difference.
