These were a series of operations (Panjsher I, II, II, IV, VI) by Soviet forces and the Afghan army in an attempt to secure the strategic Panjsher Valley. The valley was defended by various Mujahideen forces mainly led by Ahmed Shah Massoud who received the nickname, the "Prince of Panjsher or Lion of Panjsher" for his defense of this important valley.
