Ortigueira, a seaport and borough of Ferrolterra in North-western Spain, in the Province of A Coruña; on the northern slope of the Serra da Faladoira, on the river Mera and on the eastern shore of the Ria de Santa Marta--a winding, rock-bound and much indented inlet of the Bay of Biscay, between Capes Ortegal and Bares, the northernmost headlands of the Peninsula. Ferrolterra's population represents the third largest concentration of people in Galicia, and its disperse population exceeds 211,000 (2005).

The official total of the inhabitants of Ortigueira (18,426 in 1900) includes many families which dwell at some distance; the actual urban population does not exceed 2000. The industries are fishing and farming. Owing to the shallowness of the harbour large vessels cannot enter, but there is an important coasting trade, despite the dangerous character of the coast-line and the prevalence of fogs and gales. The sea-bathing and magnificent, scenery attract visitors in summer even to this remote district, which has railway and few good roads.

Due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, it could be said that Ortigueira does not enjoy extreme oscillation in its weather conditions neither in winter nor in summer. The weather is mild all the year around almost as if we were talking about one only season, and that is very different to what happens in other parts of the Iberian Peninsula. Like the rest of Galicia, it is rainy and beautifully green. Still, the summers tend to be a bit dryer than the winters.

The borough can be divided into several parishes, also known as "Parroquias", which differ from each other in extension, population density, economic activities and levels of development.

- Farming and timber production, together with services are the main economic activities. Wind-mill parks are common in Ferrolterra particularly in the boroughs of Carino, Cedeira and A Capela.[2]

- Saint Martha of Ortigueira's Day: Celebrated every 29th July, is the second most important day in the calendar of summer time Festivities celebrated in this locality, as in recent years the Ortigueira's Festival of Folk Music, which is celebrated every year a few weeks earlier, has been extended to four days (i.e.: four days non-stop party).
