Oryol Oblast

Oryol Oblast (Russian: Орло́вская о́бласть, Orlovskaya Oblast) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Its administrative center is the city of Oryol.

It is located in the southwestern part of the Central Federal District. The Kaluga Oblast and the Tula Oblast are on its northern border. The Bryansk Oblast is to the west, the Kursk Oblast to the south, and the Lipetsk Oblast to the east. From north to south, it extends more than 150 km and from west to east more than 200 km. It is one of the smallest Russian regions with a population of less than one million, approximately 62% urban and 38% rural.<ref name="kommersant">Orel Region. Retrieved on 2006-11-29.</ref>

It lies in the center of the Russian uplands within the steppe. The climate is temperate. The average January temperature is -8 °C and the average July temperature is +18 °C. Rainfall averages 490-590 mm, and snow cover averages 126 days. There are 48 million hectares of black earth soils (chernozems) in the region. This is three-quarters of the chernozem reserves in the world.<ref name="kommersant"/>
