Ōsaka-Kōbe-Kyōto is a metropolitan area that is centered on the cities of Osaka in the Osaka prefecture, Kobe in the Hyogo prefecture, and Kyoto in the Kyoto prefecture. This area has a population (as of 2000) of 18,644,000 over an area of 11,170 square kilometers[1]. The centre of this metropolitan area is Osaka City. It is the world's ninth most populated metropolitan area. It is also Japan's second most populated metropolitan area after the Greater Tokyo Area, containing roughly 15% of Japan's population.

The area is often known as Keihanshin (京阪神) in the Japanese language. This name is constructed by extracting a representative kanji from Kyoto (京都), Osaka (大阪), and Kobe (神戸), but using on readings instead of kun readings for each of the characters taken from Osaka and Kobe. After these core cities, the next largest are Sakai, a designated city, and Himeji, HigashiOsaka, Nishinomiya, and Amagasaki.
