Ox Tales is a anime series originally created in Japan and then translated for the European and North American television market. the show was based on the Dutch comic strip created by Wil Raymakers and Thijs Willems.
The plot follows the adventures of Ollie the Ox as he run The Funny Farm, containing possibly every creature known, with his best friend Jack the Turtle whilst narrated by a sarcastic Toucan.
The show was originally an anime created in Japan where it was originally known as "Gera Gera Boos Monogatari" and was produced by Telescreen Japan Inc / Teleimage ltd / Meander Studio. It was first broadcast between 6 October 1988 and 29 December 1990 but was shown later in other territories and repeated over many years, often every morning during school holidays. Other foreign names for the show are "Boes", "Funny Farm Madness", "Chuckling Bus Story of Boos", "Mush Hashor" and "Fantazoo".
There were 102 12 minute episodes filmed, however these were usually transmitted as double deliveries in 24 minute slots.
The English versions are known for the sheer amount of (sometimes painful) puns spoken by the characters to accompany the visuals, giving the impression that translation as such may not have actually taken place, rather the visuals were watched and as many cracker style puns were fitted in as possible about whatever was on screen at the time.
A few episodes of the show were released on VHS in the early 90s, the show was officially released in DVD, in Portugal and Spain in 2006.
Ox Tales still continues to appear as a column strip in several Dutch daily and weekly newspapers.
