The Pacific Coast Theater encompasses operations that occurred in the United States bordering or close to the Pacific Ocean, including the states of California and Oregon and the territories of Washington and Idaho<ref>The Bear River Massacre was formally in Idaho Territory, which was partitioned from Washington Territory during the war.</ref>.
The campaign classification established by the United States National Park Service<ref>U.S. National Park Service, Civil War Battle Studies by Campaign
</ref> contains only one campaign and one battle in this theater. Other operations west of the Mississippi River are included in the Trans-Mississippi Theater.
