Periodontium

Periodontium is a word of Medical terminology for the specialized tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. This includes stratified squamous epithelium, connective tissues of basement membrane, ligaments, cementum and alveolar bone. Periodontics is the related dental specialty.

The word comes from the Greek terms "peri" meaning around and "odons" meaning tooth. Literally taken, it means that which is "around the tooth".
