Phil Dent

Phil Dent (born February 14 1950, in Sydney, Australia) is a former professional tennis player from Australia.

He is best remembered for reaching the men's singles final at the Australian Open in 1974, where he lost to Jimmy Connors 6-7, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6. Dent was also a men's doubles champion at the Australian Open in 1975 (partnering John Alexander), and a mixed doubles champion at the US Open in 1976 (partnering Billie Jean King). Dent also reached five further Grand Slam men's doubles finals, finishing runner-up at the Australian Open in 1970, 1973 and 1977, and at the French Open in 1975 and 1979. He was a member of the Australian teams which won the Davis Cup in 1977 and the World Team Cup in 1979.

Prior to turing professional, Dent won the boy's singles titles at both the Australian Open and the French Open in 1968.

During his professional career, Dent won three top-level singles titles (at Sydney in 1971 and 1979, and Brisbane in 1979) and 25 doubles titles. His career-high singles ranking was World No. 19 (in 1978). He retired from the professional tour in 1983.

Since retiring as a player, Dent has settled in Orange County, California, in the United States. His son Taylor Dent became a professional tennis player, and competes for the US.
