Plains of San Augustin
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Plains of San Augustin or Plains of San Agustin, are found in the U.S. state of New Mexico in the San Augustin Basin, south of U.S. Highway 60. They are located west of the town of Socorro, and north of the Black Range of mountains. At the western end of the plains lie the Tularosa Mountains. The plains are probably best known as the site of the Very Large Array, a radio astronomy observatory.
The Plains of San Augustin are on the floor of a basin formed along the southeast edge of the Colorado Plateau, and lie at the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert, which is dominated by shrublands. The edges of the plains have sites of archaeological interest such as rockshelter Bat Cave.
