[edit] Classification

Ten species of the single extant genus Polymixia are known,<ref>"Polymixiidae". FishBase. Ed. Ranier Froese and Daniel Pauly. February 2006 version. N.p.: FishBase, 2006.</ref> along with several fossil genera.

At present they are classified in their own order Polymixiiformes,<ref>"Polymixiiformes". FishBase. Ed. Ranier Froese and Daniel Pauly. February 2006 version. N.p.: FishBase, 2006.</ref> but as Nelson says, "few groups have been shifted back and forth as frequently as this one".<ref>Joseph S. Nelson. Fishes of the World. John Wiley & Sons.
