The Procolophonids were early herbivorous, anapsid reptiles that appeared late in the Permian, to the end of the Triassic. They were shaped like chunky (stocky) lizards, with broad-cheeked skulls. Their cheeks sported a stout backward-pointing spike, even though Hypsognathus, from North America, had many cheek spikes. Procolophon, the best-known genus of the group is unusual.
