Proposals is a play by Neil Simon that was first shown on Broadway in 1997. The play is set in 1953, and follows the romantic entanglements surrounding the Hines family, gathered for what would be the last time at their retreat in the Poconos.

- Clemma Diggins: the housekeeper and the story’s narrator. She dreads a visit from Lewis, who walked out of her life seven years ago.
- Burt Hines: Burt is convalescing from a second heart attack. He is a recovering workaholic who looks forward to the arrival of Anni, his ex-wife.
- Josie Hines: Josie, Burt’s daughter, has just broken off her engagement with Ken. She pines for Ray.
- Ken Norman: Ken is an intense Harvard law student. Josie has just broken off her engagement to him, since she pines for Ken’s friend Ray Dolenz.
- Ray Dolenz: Ray is the aspiring writer with whom Josie once had a brief fling. Josie still pines for him, even though Ray has shown up with Sammii.
- Lewis Barnett: Lewis is Clemma’s husband, who has returned after deserting Clemma seven years ago.
- Anni Robbins: Burt's ex-wife, who has also returned.
- Sammii: A dim-witted fashion model who arrives with Ray Dolenz.
- Vinnie Bavasi: a malapropism-spouting South Florida Mafia type who arrives uninvited to press his claim with Josie, with whom he once danced in Miami.
