Proturans (Order Protura) are one of the three hexapod groups that are no longer considered insects (along with Collembola and Diplura). These are minute, white or pale brown, entognathous animals less than 1½ mm in length. Proturans lack both eyes and antennae. Because they lack antennae they are often seen with their fore-legs held up as tactile organs. Proturans are the only type of hexapod that go through anamorphosis. During anamorphosis, abdominal segments are added to their body. When fully mature, their abdomen has 12 segments.
