The pterygomeningeal artery (also accessory branch of middle meningeal artery, accessory meningeal artery, small meningeal or parvidural branch) is a branch of the maxillary artery, sometimes derived from the middle meningeal artery.

[edit] Course

It enters the skull through the foramen ovale, and supplies the semilunar ganglion and dura mater.

[edit] Nomenclature

This artery was formerly known as the accessory meningeal artery, but has been officially renamed in the Terminologia Anatomica to pterygomeningeal artery to reflect the fact that only about 10% of the blood flowing through this artery reaches intracranial structures.
