Under British rule, the Queen's Official Birthday was a public holiday in the second Monday in June, but was replaced by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day after the handover to China. Commonwealth Day used to be a school holiday. Dr Sun Yat Sen's birthday anniversary is a school holiday. The Sino-Japanese War Victory Anniversary ("the Saturday preceding the last Monday in August" and "Liberation Day, being the last Monday in August" (重光紀念日) before the handover was a public holiday, before being replaced by the Labour Day and the PRC National Day.
According to Hong Kong laws, if a designated public holiday falls on a Sunday or on the same day of another holiday, the immediate following weekday would be a public holiday. However, there are exceptions; for example, as Lunar New Year 2007 falls on a Sunday (February 18th), the government have designated the Saturday directly before (February 17th) as a public holiday.
