QuickTime Alternative is a codec package for Microsoft Windows created for playing QuickTime files with any video player that supports DirectShow. Normally, Apple's official QuickTime software is required. QuickTime Alternative uses codecs taken from QuickTime 7. As such, its legitimacy has come into question as neither the codec package is a licensed Apple product, nor is this specific version of QuickTime available free of charge. Also included are a pre-release version of CoreAVC and the latest version of CoreAAC, as well as Media Player Classic and the QuickTime web browser plugin, which supports Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Mozilla and Netscape.
Similar to Real Alternative, QuickTime Alternative is the result of repeated criticisms by users towards the respective official software. Some complaints include an overly intrusive install and a habit of not fully removing all of its components upon uninstall.<ref>Review of QuickTime on Softpedia</ref>
