Red Guards (Finland)

During the Civil War in Finland, 1918, the Red Guards were the socialist and communist revolutionaries of Finland who were defeated by the anti-Socialist White Guards and (Imperial) German forces, who feared the Russian Revolution was spread to Finland by the Reds' rebellion. There strengt were about 30,000 in the begining of the civilwar and at the peak of the war they were 90,000-120,000

The leader of the Red Guards was Kullervo Manner and the Finnish red government was called "The People´s Delegation". The Red Guard party was in power from 29th January to the end of April 1918 in the South Finland. The red´s general staff was in Helsinki. The other major city controlled by Manner´s forces was Tampere, and during the civil war there were over 15.000 enlisted red guard men and women, under the command of red leaders Hugo Salmela and Eino Rahja, a famous bolschevist and Lenin´s bodyguard. The red Tampere become to its end in 5.4.1918 after bloody battles when Mannerheim´s white guards conquered the city. They got thousands of red prisoners, hundreds of them were executed and the rest were transported to POW camps. Helsinki was in white control 12th April 1918.
