"Rip Her to Shreds" is track number 8 from Blondie's self titled début album Blondie. It was also the first single to be released on Chrysalis Records in 1977, although it did not chart in the U.K. The B-sides to this single were "In the Flesh" and "X-Offender".

In Australia, the song "In the Flesh" was played by mistake, instead of "Rip Her to Shreds", on the nationally broadcast music program Countdown, and was well received by the viewing audience. Chrysalis Records released the song as a single in Australia only, and it quickly reached number 4 on the Australian singles chart. Australia therefore became the first territory in which the group achieved a hit single, and the album sold well. Blondie did not achieve a world-wide hit until almost a year later, when the single "Denis" reached number 2 on the British singles chart.

In a BBC Radio documentary about Blondie, Debbie Harry said the song is about what gossip columns do to people's lives. 1
