The Royal League is an annual Scandinavian football tournament, starting after the end of the regular domestic seasons of Norway and Sweden. Denmark, however, are in mid-season when the tournament starts. The four best-placed teams in the football leagues of Denmark, Norway and Sweden participate in the tournament.

The first season of the tournament started on November 11, 2004, and ended in a final between IFK Göteborg and F.C. Copenhagen on May 26, 2005, with F.C. Copenhagen winning the title in a penalty shootout.

The second season started on November 10, 2005, and ended in a final between F.C. Copenhagen and Lillestrøm S.K. on April 6, 2006, with F.C. Copenhagen winning the title in the last minutes.

[edit] Rules

  • From 2006-07: The twelve participating teams are placed into three groups of four clubs each. The teams of each group face each other home and away. The group winners and runners-up qualify for the quarterfinals, along with the two best 3rd placed teams. As opposed to the previous edition of the tournament, the knock-out stages are played as single legs, with the team having the best group stage record earning home advantage.
  • 2005-06: The twelve participating teams will initially be placed into three groups. In each group each team will play against the other three teams, home and away. Then the two best-placed teams of each group, and the two best third-placed teams will play quarterfinals. From here on the rest of the tournament will be played in a knockout-system. The teams will play quarterfinals and semifinals both at home and away, while there will only be played one final.
  • 2004-05: The twelve participating teams will initially be placed into three groups. The two best-placed teams from each country will be placed in the same group, while the two other teams will be placed in the two other groups. In each group each team will play against the other three teams, home and away. Then the two best-placed teams of each group will randomly be placed into two new groups. The three teams of each new group will play each other, home and away. The final will be played between the winners of each group.
