[edit] History
Insignia for officers was first introduced in 1748, with differences in rank being seen in the cut of the lapels and the cuffs. Over the Victorian era the uniforms gradually evolved, and the ceremonial dress has stayed more or less the same throughout the 20th century to the present day.
