[edit] History

Originally named the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company, the company was founded in Denver, Colorado in 1910 by Jesse Shwayder. Samsonite was launched as a brand in 1941, receiving its name from the biblical character Samson, renowned for his strength. The brand was most notable for being the first luggage brand to incorporate fake leather, allowing for attractive and cheap suitcases. The company soon changed its name to match that of the successful brand. Samsonite, derived from the latin term, "sam" and "nili", is made of a sturdy material known to withstand tremendous amounts of pressure; to include incessant banging by luggage handlers.[citation needed]
