Sandra "Sandy" Cheeks is a fictional animated character in the Nickelodeon animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants. Sandy is voiced by Carolyn Lawrence.
Sandy is a very talented and athletic squirrel born in the state of Texas, who moved to Bikini Bottom in the South Pacific Ocean underneath Bikini Atoll in 1998, for her job - inventing things and experimenting underwater. She lives in an air-filled habitat structure called the Treedome (a polyurethane dome containing a tree, living quarters and various other land plants). When outside of the Treedome, Sandy wears an air-filled diving outfit that looks much like an astronaut's space suit; while in her Treedome, she wears a purple bikini with a purple skirt-like ring around her middle and with green underneath. Physically, Sandy is one of the strongest creatures (along with Larry Lobster) in Bikini Bottom. She even claims to be stronger than Larry, and the strongest one in Bikini Bottom and she can even pull down gigantic ships and boats from the surface of the ocean as seen in "Sandy, SpongeBob, and the Worm".

Sandy's interests include karate, meditation, surfing, various forms of extreme activities, and science. Related to the latter - specifically astronomy - Sandy is an esteemed scientist and inventor, and has built her own rocket ship. She's even gone to the moon; but, unlike SpongeBob, she does not believe in moon creatures. In the Episode "Wishing You Well", Sandy wished for an underwater telescope, proving her love for astronomy. Recently, Sandy also has taken (and got carried away with) explosive special effects in filmmaking.

According to the episode, "Wormy", Sandy also has a large variety of pets, including caterpillars, snakes, crickets, mice, and birds, among others. A caterpillar named Wormy she owned once caused a riot among the citizens of Bikini Bottom, after it transformed into a butterfly and escaped her Treedome in a bubble.

Sandy became one of SpongeBob SquarePants's best friends after saving him from a giant clam (The clam first tried to eat Sandy, but almost ate spongebob after he jumped into its mouth and started wrestling with its tongue), and she enjoys various activities with him (including karate). Sandy is also a friend to Patrick, but she is not too keen with him and usually just plays with him because he is with SpongeBob. She is also believed to be friends with Larry the Lobster - SpongeBob is sometimes jealous and sometimes thinks Sandy likes Larry better than him.
The nature of Sandy's relationship with SpongeBob is somewhat ambiguous. SpongeBob has brought her flowers on several occasions, and her official biography describes her as being "the apple of SpongeBob's eye (the only thing under the sea he likes better than his job at the Krusty Krab)." In Tea at the Treedome amorous music plays when Spongebob recalls Sandy's words. Spongebob's song in Ripped Pants has romantic lyrics. Once in a "Random Acts Of SpongeBob" clip SpongeBob dropped Sandy a letter (with a bouquet of flowers) that called her the "smartest, prettiest squirrel in all of Bikini Bottom." It was on the "Surprise Sandy day".

[edit] Personality and Origin
Sandy is somewhat sensitive about her minority status as an air-breathing mammal. She's generally friendly and positive, but can be very fierce and vindictive when angered. She is prone to mood swings. Despite sometimes playing the level-headed character, she is also known to be a little crazy at times. In "Pre-Hibernation Week", when she believes SpongeBob has gone missing, she goes mad trying to find him. Also, at the beginning of "Pressure" when she explains the acorn symbol on her suit, SpongeBob remarks — "I thought that meant you were nuts."
Sandy is an avowed Texas partisan, and speaks with a southern accent (although whether her accent is genuinely "Texan" is debatable); she takes strong offense at any negative comments about Texas.
Despite her love of Texas, she seems to have grown too fond of Bikini Bottom to go back. In the recent episode "Chimps Ahoy", she is seen sobbing at the idea of leaving her underwater home.

Sandy's underwater home, the "Treedome" is a highly advanced domicile, hardly surprising given Sandy's vast knowledge of science and physics. It contains a tree, living quarters and many other things. It is the one place in Bikini Bottom where Sandy can be without her airsuit, although she did take it off in the episode "Pressure" while inside the Krusty Krab, albeit for a bet, which she lost due to requiring to breath and almost drowning.

- Her full name is Sandra "Sandy" Cheeks, an obvious double-entendre cousin to the name of the underwater city, Bikini Bottom. Her 'proper' name was revealed in the episode "Patrick SmartPants" where the smart Patrick called Sandy "Sandra".
- She invented a teleportation machine that can teleport atoms between any two points in an instant, which unfortunately malfunctioned - fusing both SpongeBob and Squidward together. To rectify this mistake, she constructed the "Molecular Separator Ray", which separated SpongeBob's and Squidward's intertwined bodies.
- For Halloween, Sandy was a goldfish in a bowl (her air helmet being the bowl). Nobody else understood it.
- Sandy introduced to SpongeBob (who, in turn, introduces it to the other citizens of Bikini Bottom) the holiday of Christmas.
- Since Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are too old for action scenes, Sandy has recently taken on the role of Mermaid Man's stunt double, and uses karate against Kelp Thing.
- Spongebob, Squidward, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs all assumed that aquatic animals were better than air breathing animals, in which Sandy exploded by ripping her suit off and claiming she didn't need it. She later had a zoom inside her body which shows one of her lungs shrivling up and falling like a dead leaf, before she quickly grabs a pickle jar and slams it over her head for air, She loses another bet in which she says that they wouldn't last a minute on dry land, but they do.
- Sandy Cheeks dared SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward to go up on dry land in one episode, on the island of Bikini Atoll, just above Bikini Bottom. For this sequence the characters turned into live-action stick puppets, and Sandy's puppet looked like a Ty Beanie Baby Squirrel toy.
- Sandy enjoys sky-diving, along with just about any kind of daredevil activity.
- Sandy's home is yearly inspected by chimpanzees.
- Sliding down Sand Mountain is one of her favorite activities, along with "finding the hay in the needlestack" and tandem bike-riding through the industrial park with an unwilling SpongeBob.
- Her wrestling of the giant clam in "Tea at the Treedome" is said to be a reference to Botticelli's The Birth of Venus.
- In Season 3 and 4 episodes, Sandy has an acorn badge. In Seasons 1 - and at the beginning of 2 - she does not, instead she has a yellow badge with three black dots. However, the badge was first seen in "Pre-Hibernation Week", a season 2 episode.
- Sandy's arms appear less muscular than SpongeBob's arms most of the time (although they actually are much stronger), and sometimes she is shown with exaggerated muscular arms.
- An authentic Italian Sandy Cheeks charm was made in Italy by Caso Doro.
- When she hibernates, she becomes an enormous ugly bear-like creature, opposed to her usual cutesy-sweet squirrel appearance.
- She has the tendency to talk in her sleep — and she is murderous when she sleepwalks.
- Sandy was originally supposed to appear in "Where's Gary?" but did not make an appearance.
- She has a built an escape pod in her house and can use it to go back to Texas, whenever she feels that she should evacuate, although it is possible she built it after "Texas", where, despite feeling homesick, she doesn't use the escape pod to go back to Texas.
- SpongeBob and Patrick once pulled a prank in which he put a lot of portraits of Patrick all over Sandy's house.
- Sandy likes to drink spicy sauces and even consumes Volcano Sauce.
- Sandy was dressed as Beatrix Kiddo, the Bride from Kill Bill, in the episode "Karate Island".
- In the first season of SpongeBob SquarePants, Sandy's tail is not shown outside her diving suit.
- Sandy is very ticklish. This was revealed in "Karate Island".
- Sandy is about SpongeBob's height (10 centimeters), but most red squirrels range between 19-23 centimeters. She may be a newborn red squirrel. But, Sandy must be the age of SpongeBob. In "Chimps Ahoy", her bosses gave her twenty more years of funding for her treedome, so she could be SpongeBob's age. What is strange is that most red squirrels have average lifespan of three years.
- The popular Nick show The Fairly Oddparents once made a reference to Sandy Cheeks. In an episode when Timmy Turner wishes himself a fish and meets the King of Atlantis, the king mentions that his species enjoys an occasional underwater squirrel. (Note: He said this as he burped a squirrel tail out of his mouth.)
- Unlike Sandy, her relative The Dark Knight did not need an air helmet. Why this is is unknown, but it is possible that she was a witch.
- Her voice can be heard in Jimmy Timmy Power Hour for a brief scene.
