Sarthe is a French département, named after the Sarthe River.

The département was created after the French Revolution, on March 4 1790 pursuant to the law of December 22 1789, starting from a part of province of Maine which divided into two departements, the Sarthe and the Mayenne.<ref>[1]</ref>

The département of Sarthe forms part of the région Pays-de-la-Loire. It borders on the départements of Orne, Eure-et-Loir, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, Maine-et-Loire and Mayenne.
