Scavenging can have the following meanings:

  1. In chemistry, scavenging consists of any number of chemical reactions whereby certain chemicals (or larger agglomerated particles or organisms) are purged from a given environment by reaction with another chemical.
  2. In cellular biology, scavenging is the process of removal of (usually unwanted) chemicals such as reactive oxygen species, LDL cholesterol, or bacteria.
  3. In automotive usage, scavenging is the process of pushing exhausted gas-charge out of the cylinder and drawing in a fresh draught of air ready for the next cycle.
  4. In computer networking, scavenging is the process of cleaning and removing outdated or extinct names data from the DNS database.
