Schuyler County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 7,189. Its county seat is Rushville, Illinois6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,143 km² (441 mi²). 1,133 km² (437 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it (0.92%) is water.

Schuyler County was formed in 1825 out of Pike and Fulton Counties. It is named in honor of Philip Schuyler, member of the Continental Congress and Senator from New York.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,189 people, 2,975 households, and 2,070 families residing in the county. The population density was 6/km² (16/mi²). There were 3,304 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.80% White, 0.22% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.54% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 2,975 households out of which 28.70% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.70% were married couples living together, 7.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% were non-families. 27.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the county the population was spread out with 23.10% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 19.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 98.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $35,233, and the median income for a family was $41,489. Males had a median income of $29,253 versus $21,235 for females. The per capita income for the county was $17,158. About 6.80% of families and 10.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.70% of those under age 18 and 13.40% of those age 65 or over.
