September 2006 was a month with thirty days. The month was marked by a controversy surrounding statements made by Pope Benedict XVI regarding Islam, during the same week as the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The death of Steve Irwin, star of The Crocodile Hunter early in the month due to a stingray attack. Meanwhile, the Space Shuttle Atlantis made a mission to the International Space Station and a coup d'état was carried out by the Royal Thai Army, ousting Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
