- This article is about two biblical figures. For the mathematician, see Saharon Shelah; for "Shelah HaKodesh" see Isaiah Horowitz; for the parshah or portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah readings, see Shlach; for the head of the school at Nehardea, see Rav Shela
Shelah or Shela (שֵׁלָה "Petition", Standard Hebrew Šela, Tiberian Hebrew Šēlāh) is the name of two persons in the Bible:
- The son of Arpachshad, and thus the grandson of Shem. In the Septuagint, however, Arpachshad's son was Cainan, making Shelah Arpachshad's grandson. Shelah was thirty years old when his first son, Eber, was born, and lived to be 433. (Genesis 10:24, Genesis 11:12-15, I Chronicles 1:18, 24)
- A son of Judah, whom he would not let be Tamar's husband. (Genesis 38:5,11,14,26; 46:10; Numbers 26:20; 1 Chronicles 2:3; 4:21) He became father of Er and Laadah and the ancestor of the Shelanites.
