For roadside shoe trees, see Shoe tree (roadside attraction).

A shoe tree is a device approximating the shape of a foot that is placed inside a shoe to preserve its shape and thereby extend the life of the shoe. Higher quality shoe trees are made from solid wood, usually Cedar which helps control odor and absorb moisture. Cheaper shoe trees are made of plastic, with a coiled metal spring stem, but they do not absorb moisture or eliminate odor. Since plastic shoe trees are lighter they are preferred when traveling.
