Silver the Hedgehog (シルバー・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Shirubā za Hejjihoggu) a new character in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. He is a white male anthropomorphic hedgehog who hails from the future. He is playable in Sonic the Hedgehog as well as Sonic Rivals.

[edit] Sonic the Hedgehog
Silver lives approximately 200 years in the future. This world was brought to ruins by the the evil monster Iblis and the force known as the Flames of Disaster.
Silver and his partner Blaze the Cat battle Iblis every day. However, no matter what they do, they can't defeat it, for it continues to revive itself after its destruction. Silver decides that in order to defeat the Iblis, he must destroy the "Iblis Trigger" that caused its formation. After gathering data from Mephiles the Dark, Silver is convinced that the Trigger is Sonic the Hedgehog and goes back in time to search and destroy him, reviving the Flames of Disaster through Elise's sadness. The hedgehog that resembles Mephiles' second form (Shadow the Hedgehog) and Silver use Chaos Control to travel back in time to discover the truth of the Flames of Disaster, and while Shadow seals Mephiles in the Scepter of Darkness, Silver watches Elise's father seal the Iblis in Elise and gives her his Chaos Emerald for protection before leaving. After telling Blaze that Sonic wasn't their objective, Silver runs off to assist Sonic in rescuing Elise but arrive too late, and watches in horror as he sees Elise die in a crash. To save Elise, he helps Sonic travel to the past and, as a form of gratitude, Sonic gives Silver a second Chaos Emerald to use to get back to his own time. After returning to his time to fight Iblis, he attempts to seal Iblis inside himself to stop the threat, but could only watch as Blaze sealed Iblis inside herself, then warped herself into another dimension saving the future. After he discovers why Mephiles wanted him to kill Sonic, he helps find the remaining Chaos Emeralds to revive Sonic and help destroy Solaris in his super form. In the end, Silver is finally able to return to his time with his life in peace, remembering the times he shared with Blaze. <ref>http://www.sega.com/gamesite/sonicnext/sonicnext_full/index.php</ref><ref>http://sonic.sega.jp/sonic</ref> However, since putting out the Flames of Disaster caused the events of the game to vanish, Blaze may still be in Silver's time and dimension.
[edit] Sonic Rivals
Silver is another one of Sonic's rivals, backed by his confirmed playable appearance in Sonic Rivals which features three other rivals: Knuckles the Echidna, Shadow the Hedgehog and Metal Sonic. He is apparently responding to some distress signal, though he doesn't know who is sending it. Eggman Nega is somehow linked to this distress signal, unbeknownst to him. He is also given two alternate costumes. Due to the events that unraveled at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog, causing Sonic and Silver's memories of each other to vanish, Silver and Sonic are introduced to each other for the first time.

Silver has "a strong sense of justice" and it is, in part, this personality trait that motivates him to head back into the past to correct the future. Also, he belives in standing up for those who can't stand up for themselves (it is this trait that led him to accept Blaze when everybody else was teasing her for her pyrokinetic abilities). Although seemingly serious in nature, an interview states that Silver is young and slightly immature. <ref name="Nakamaru interview"> Nakamaru interview [1]</ref> Blaze actually comments on this, claiming that he is naive several times, then before sacrificing herself she comments that that is what she always liked about him, leading to ideas that they both had feelings for each other.
Sonic Team was originally thinking about making Silver's personality similar to Shadow, however they did not want to have similar characters.
[edit] Abilities
Silver, unlike Sonic and Shadow, does not possess super speed. Instead, he commands telekinetic abilities, which are apparently quite normal in his time. As such, he is capable of manipulating objects around him. He can also manipulate himself, levitating in the air and even zooming at high speeds. In Sonic Rivals, he is also capable of confusing his enemies. Like Sonic and Shadow, Silver has the ability of Chaos Control.

By either direct contact with the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, or indirect contact via another Super Form, Silver is able to transform into Super Silver. In Super Form, Silver's fur becomes a white gold color, and his quills float in the same fashion as Super Knuckles'. Silver's mane also becomes a deep gold.
In Super Form, Silver gains increased speed, increased defense, and the ability to fly. His telekinetic powers also have an improved range, meaning he is able to grab objects at a wider distance. He is also able to use charged dashes. Like all Super Forms, the power is Ring dependent. As such, Silver will revert to normal form if he runs out of Rings.

Official concept artwork released by Sonic Cult (which was at first thought to be fake, but has since been confirmed as official) shows an early design of Silver.<ref>http://www.sonic-cult.org/newsx/fullnews.php?id=110</ref> The main differences from the current final design include a long orange mane around his neck, and bright blue eyes. His boots are also quite different. It is unknown however whether Yuji Uekawa, the main character designer of the Sonic series, actually produced the artwork.
More concept art of Silver was released in an interview with IGN, which were generally less similar to his current design. Notable designs include a hedgehog wearing a futuristic headset and another with markings on its quills. It is also revealed that Silver was originally named "Venice" <ref>http://www.sonic-cult.org/newsx/fullnews.php?id=111</ref> (after Venice, Italy, the place Soleanna is based on)and was considered to be a mink, but that idea was later abandoned. - Blaze the Cat - She is from the same time as Silver, and is a playable character in the next-gen Sonic game, Sonic the Hedgehog. Although Blaze is shy around strangers and strict with herself, she works well with Silver as a partner and secretly harbors strong feelings for him, although whether or not the feelings are mutual is unknown. Blaze views Silver as a younger brother, to hide her true feelings from him, and they constantly work together to fight Iblis in the future. Silver is also emotionally dependent upon Blaze. Before she vanishes from their world at the end of Silver's story in Sonic the Hedgehog, Blaze reveals that she always liked how naive Silver was.
- Amy Rose - In Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy initially mistakes Silver for Sonic, but they then team up to help each other find the people they are looking for, unaware that they are both looking for the same person; Sonic. Amy's alliance with Silver was only temporary; she became his friend and promised to help him find the "Iblis Trigger", but left him upon finding out that he intended to kill Sonic.
- Sonic the Hedgehog - In Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic is referred to, by Mephiles, as being the "Iblis Trigger" that set Iblis free years before Silver's time. Silver is bent on stopping Sonic from unleashing Iblis onto the world but, over time, Silver begins to draw a liking to Sonic. In Sonic Rivals, Sonic first notices Silver's "attitude" when they first meet, and they don't exactly see eye-to-eye at first, but, in the end, the two help each other out during the last stage of the game.
- Mephiles the Dark - In Sonic the Hedgehog, Silver's frustration at Iblis' constant resurrections is used against him by Mephiles to ensure Iblis release in the past. Mephiles informs Silver that in the past Sonic served as the 'Iblis Trigger' and uses his powers to send Silver and Blaze back in time in order to assassinate Sonic before this can occur. In reality, Sonic's death would serve as the catalyst. Silver initially believes Mephiles' lies, but his encounters with Sonic and the others begin to make him question Mephiles' intentions.
- Knuckles the Echidna - Silver and Knuckles are both rivals in the next-gen game for PSP, Sonic Rivals and they, also, both appear in Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Shadow the Hedgehog - Silver and Shadow are both rivals in the next-gen game for PSP, Sonic Rivals, and they both also appear in Sonic the Hedgehog. In Sonic the Hedgehog, when Silver first meets Shadow, he mistakes him for Mephiles and this and other events help Silver learn more about Mephiles and his intentions. In Sonic Rivals, Shadow, at first, does not trust Silver's instincts about Dr. Eggman's real persona, but, after realizing that Silver's speculations were right, the two form a bond and they help each other in the final stage of the game.
