[edit] About Sir Crocodile

Crocodile is the central villain of the Alabasta arc, as well as puppetmaster of the events during the Whiskey Peak and Little Garden story arcs. He is a former member of the Shichibukai, a Devil Fruit user (Sand Sand Fruit, スナスナの実 Suna Suna no Mi), as well as president incognito of the crime syndicate, Baroque Works. Crocodile is the longest running primary villain of the series, as well as the first opponent to hand the series' hero, Monkey D. Luffy, a total defeat. First by impaling him through the chest with his hook, then later by absorbing all of the water out of his body. Both times Crocodile left Luffy for dead, a mistake he would later come to regret.

Before achieving Shichibukai status, Crocodile's former bounty was 81,000,000 belli, but it has been stated that if his bounty had represented his actual threat level during the Alabasta arc, it would be at least double that.<ref name="SBS1"> SBS questions: One Piece Manga - Vol.36 - Chapter 342, Fan question: What are the bounties in the world of One Piece based on? </ref>

In a recent Japanese Fan Poll, Crocodile is currently ranked the 25th most popular character in One Piece.

[edit] Personality and Relationships

Crocodile has traits that are an amalgamation of the previous primary villains of One Piece. He has Morgan's influence on the public, powers gained by way of a Devil Fruit (ala Buggy), Kuro's knack for planning, Arlong's cruelty, Krieg's carelessness for his subordinates and Wapol's dictatorous ambitions.

During public appearances, Crocodile poses as an aloof but courageous vigilante, often quickly and efficiently dispatching rogue pirate attacks before the Alabasta guard are able to respond. These acts help better his image among the people, while additionally undermining Nefertari Cobra's ability to protect his subjects. In private, however, Crocodile is brooding and perceptive. While constructing the idea for Project: Utopia, Crocodile projected every possible pitfall and prepared multiple contingencies as corrective measures. After hearing about Mr. 2 Bon Clay's encounter with the Strawhat Pirates, Crocodile was able to deduce that the white bands tied around each Strawhat arm were a safeguard against Mr. 2 Bon Clay's infiltration.

Crocodile is most well known for his sadism, impatience, apathy, and opportunism. Although quite reserved, Crocodile is quick to painfully punish anyone who fails him, even his own officer agents. After succeeding in driving the Alabasta Rebels from the city of Yuba with a relentless bombardment of sandstorms, Crocodile continued to invoke storms simply to spite the old man Toto who was intent on keeping the city alive.

Miss Goldenweek's Rainbow Color Trap reveals that his dream once was to become the Pirate King. From this, it can be assumed that he was, once upon a time, not too different from Luffy, but his experiences on the Grand Line must have corrupted him.

Many of One Piece's primary villains were given distinct laughs. Crocodile follows in this tradition with a staccato, monotone laugh. This does not carry over in the English dub, however.

[edit] History

Years before the start of One Piece, Crocodile used his government ties among the Shichibukai to secretly establish the organization Baroque Works, which was intended to transform the sand kingdom Alabasta into a fanatical military nation with himself as de facto ruler. This motive was disguised as Crocodile's desire to build an "ideal nation", and would be codenamed by Baroque Works officers as Project: Utopia.

Alabasta proved to be an ideal target for Crocodile; not only was it the richest nation introduced in the series thus far, it had a plethora of natural resources and an easily manipulable populace. Using scandals to inflame the people's nationalistic pride and revolutionary fervor, Crocodile was not only able to politically divide the country, but was able to establish himself as a venerated hero. Furthermore, Crocodile's gifts from the Suna Suna no Mi granted him nigh-invincibility in Alabasta's desert terrain. Finally, Crocodile learned (and sought from Nico Robin) that Pluton, one of the ancient weapons of the One Piece world, was buried somewhere in the kingdom.

To preserve his public image and ensure the success of his intrigue, Crocodile adopted the alias Mr. 0 (in accordinance with the Baroque Works codename policy), and issued all orders through his Vice-President, Miss All-Sunday. Prior to a day before the initiation of Project: Utopia, only Miss All-Sunday, Mr. 8, and Miss Wednesday were aware of Mr. 0's true identity. Impersonality is one of Crocodile's strongest traits; he is best able to preserve himself by not trusting a single soul, even among the members of his own company.

Despite his god-like powers, Crocodile has one weakness; if his clothes or skin are saturated by any liquid, or if he is hit with a wet object, his body loses the ability to become sand, allowing physical blows to harm him. Luffy used this to his advantage in his 2nd and 3rd battles against Crocodile. First by using water from a barrel on his back and this finally his own blood from wounds Crocodile had given him eariler (in the english dub this is changed to sweat with Luffy explaining that his skin wasn't getting enough air due to being underground.) This weakness is not crippling, however, for Crocodile can simply absorb any offending liquid through his right hand.

Sir Crocodile was finally defeated when Luffy, despite being poisoned during their fight, hits him with a Gomu Gomu no Storm. Knocking Crocodile through the roof of the catacombs through solid bedrock and into the air where he landed in the middle of the war he started, finally exposed for the criminal he was. Following his personal defeat in Alabasta and the collapse of Baroque Works, Crocodile was detained by Chief Petty Officer Tashigi and incarcerated by Captain Smoker. As a disgrace to the World Government, Crocodile was stripped of his Warlord status and his bounty reinstated. Though Miss Goldenweek breaks him and other Baroque Works members out of prison, he and Mr. 1 decide to stay behind. In the final cover panel of this mini-arc, Crocodile and Mr. 1 (along with the newly imprisoned Mr. 2 Bon Clay and Mr. 3) were transported to the Marine prison Impel Down. Whether or not he and the other three will escape is unknown; The four remaning are powerful people, and it's doubtable to many as to whether a cage made of Seastone will restrain Crocodile. The intelligence and cunning he has displayed have led many to doubt such a prison would hold him. Because of this fact, and his own refusal to be rescued by Miss Goldenweek, it is believed that he's staying in prison by his own will. His reasons for doing this are, as of yet, unknown.

[edit] Abilities

Unlike previous villans, Crocodile has full mastery over his Devil Fruit powers; he is passively and autonomously able to transform his body into sand, cushioning otherwise fatal blows. Offensively, Crocodile can generate prodigious amounts of sand from his body, or manipulate sand from his surroundings. Using his right hand, Crocodile is able to osmotically absorb liquids from any matter; this ability kills the living through dehydration and turns everything else brittle. He is further able to increase the density of his sand, creating various sharp weapons or claws of various sizes that can even split the earth below him. Like an archetypal pirate, Crocodile's left hand is replaced with a golden hook. When removed it reveals a second hook coated in a potent scorpion venom that induces cardiac arrest; if the hook is broken, Crocodile can reveal a knife. Crocodile's hook was mistakenly replaced with his right hand in one panel of the Miss Goldenweek Mini-Arc, where Crocodile was shown handcuffed with two intact hands. This was confirmed to be a mistake on the author's part and corrected in the Volume 41 tankōbon. The hook mistake was also shown in one scene of the anime where Crocodile is seen lighting a cigar with his left hand and holding it with his right. His attacks are originally written in French, Spanish, and Italian.

Attacks

  • Desert Spada (砂漠の宝刀(デザート・スパーダ, Dezāto Supāda), Desert Sword) / (Desert Dagger): Crocodile forms his right hand into loose blade of fast-moving sand, then extends it along the ground like a torpedo splitting anything in its path including the very ground itself, through extreme and focused erosion, created by the sand-blade. 'Spada' is the Italian word for 'sword,' similarly Espada is Spanish for a rapier type sword.
  • Desert Girasole (砂漠の向日葵(デザート・ジラソーレ, Dezāto Girasōre), Desert Sunflower): Crocodile creates another loose sand blade from his right hand like with Desert Spada but this time he stabs it into the ground causing an area in front of him to collapse into a giant pit of quicksand, with the sand being taking away by underground rivers (which he can detect). Anything caught in the pit will be sucked in and buried alive.
  • Barchan (三日月形砂丘(バルハン, baruhan), Crescent-Shaped Dune) / (Crescent Cutlass): Crocodile swings his right arm forward while leaving a crescent shaped trail of sand behind it. Anything hit by that trail is instantly robbed of all moisture thanks to Crocodile's dehydration ability and left dried and shriveled. A 'barchan' is a crescent-shaped sand dune.
  • Sables (砂嵐(サーブルス, Sāburusu))/ (Sandstorm): Crocodile summons a massive tornado of sand and sends it on a rampage. Once this sandstorm grows large enough, even he can't stop it. 'Sable' is French for 'Sand' so the term 'Sables' can mean 'sands' but it can also refer to a 'sandstorm.' 'Sable' is also Spanish for 'saber.'
  • Ground Seco (干割(グラウンド・セッコ, Guraundo Sekko), Ground Drying) / (Wasteland Tremor): Crocodile places his hand on the ground and uses his dehydration ability to dry out a huge area around him turning it into a desert wasteland. When he does this is can also cause the area around him to crumble and cave in, causing unfortunate foes to crash to their death. 'Seco' is Spanish for 'Dry'.
  • Ground Death (浸食輪廻(グラウンド・デス, Guraundo Desu)) / (Wasteland Cataclysm) / (Mass Erosion): An extremely strong version of Ground Seco, this time Crocodile not only dries up the ground, but anything and everything on it including people and even buildings, all of which is transformed into sand if it has contact with the ground. The speed at which things dry also seems to increase.
  • Desert Encierro / (Desert Prison): Crocodile grabs someone with his right hand, then slowly and/or quickly drains the moisture from them with his dehydration ability, leaving them in a whithered state. 'Encierro' is the Spanish word for 'prison'.
  • Sables Pesado (砂嵐『重(ぺサード, Pesādo)』, Heavy Sands) / (Sandstorm Burden): Crocodile gathers a swirling mass of extremely dense sand in his hand, then hurls it that his opponent causing a massive shockwave upon impact. 'Sable' is French for 'sand' and 'Pesado' is Spanish for 'heavy'.
  • Desert la Spada (砂漠の金剛宝刀(デザート・ラスパーダ, Dezāto Rasupāda), Desert the Swords) / (Desert Rapier): An altered version of Desert Spada but this time he forms several solid blades with fan-shaped edges instead of one large made from sand. This is the only time Crocodile has formed solid objects out of sand.
