Skopelos (Greek: Σκόπελος) is an island, a province which is better known as the Northern Sporades and a municipality in the central part of the Sporades and the northeastern part of the island. The port of Skopelos in Skopelos Town, or Chora, is located in the northeastern part near the centre of the island and serves the cities of Thessaloniki, Volos, Skiathos and Alonissos by hyrofoils or ferries. The island is shaped from southeast to northwest, the length is from northwest to southeast and the width is from southwest to northeast. The nearest islands are Skiathos to the west and Alonissos to the east. It is located east of mainland Greece and Magnesia and northeast of Euboea. The place was known as Peparethos. In 342 BCE, the island was attacked by Philip II of Macedon. Skopelos has one main road which links the three main villages on the western part of the island.

[edit] Transportation
Being the biggist of the Islands in the Sporades , supprising enough it does not have a airport. This is due to the land being far to hilly , although there is a helipad incase of emergencys. if you wish to fly the best option is to fly to Skiathos (The easier option) or Volos and get a hydrofoil.
There are 2 ports on the island , Skopelos Town and Glossa
All the hydrofoils to the island dock at Skopelos Town and most Normally stop at Glossa On the way to Skiathos (From Alonniss) Or Coming From Skiathos going to Alonniss. By hydrofoil/Ferry From Skopelos Town its possibal to get to Glossa(The north of the island)Skiathos , Alonniss , Volos and Agios Konstantions.
Warning: During the end of the holiday season and during the winter when the seas pick up it is some times not possibal to dock on the island and sometimes the hydrofoils will dock at Agnontas.
There is a bus service on the island , this runs from Skopoles Town to Loutraki (this follows the main road round the island)
This runs 8 times a day , A further 3 go as far as Panormos , and anouther 2 only go as far as Agnonta.
Taxis
They all base at the taxi rank in Skopelos Town and a few in Loutraki , They tend to cost between 5 and 10 euros. (At the end of the holiday season the taxi drivers tend to get a bit picky about jobs.)

[edit] Information
Skopelos is the greenest island in the Mediterranean Sea [citation needed]. Because the island of Skopelos is defined by lush green forest and the blue of the sea the International Organization of Biopolitics, on July 5, 1997, officially proclaimed it "Green and Blue Island".
Similarly the town of Skopelos, by presidential decree, (19/10/1978 Presidential Decree 594,13-11/78). was honored as a Traditional Settlement of outstanding beauty. (The Greek equivalent of a site of Outstanding Architectural Inheritance).
The geography of Skopelos includes a mountaintop to the northwest and bushy and rocky hills around Skopelos. Most of the villages are to the west. Agriculture is also common, mainly mixed farming and vineyards, the main products are wine and plums. Fishing is also common on the island. Tourism is, however, the main industry. The municipality is encircled by the Aegean Sea.
