Socklessness simply means dressing without socks. However, it has had significance in different fashions over the years: many feminine styles incorporate socklessness. During the 1980s many pop bands experimented with socklessness, especially as part of the New Romantic movement, in which wearing suits and the absence of socks were considered sophisticated. It has also become very common for masculine styles to be advertised with models who are sockless.

Don Johnson's trademark in Miami Vice was wearing his loafers sockless.

Countless athletes have performed sockless.

Many performers choose to act sockless. An example is Daniel Radcliffe in the upcoming production of Equus.

Prior to the start of the millennium, it was common for people of both sexes to wear their shoes without socks during the summer. Beginning in the 1990s and carrying into the 2000s, when socklessness become popular, those who prefer socks but desire the "sockless look" have opted for socks that end below the ankle.
