Solvay is an international chemical and pharmaceutical company. It was founded in 1863 by Ernest Solvay to produce sodium carbonate by the solvay process. Since then it has diversified to three major sectors of activity: Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals and Plastics.
Solvay, which operates in Pharmaceuticals, Chemicals and Plastics, generated EUR 8.6 billion of sales in 2005 from more than 400 units in over 50 countries. Almost 30,000 people, 2,650 of them in research, apply their talents daily to satisfying the Group’s 160,000 clients.

Solvay Pharmaceuticals activities of the human health group are focused on four main areas: psychiatry, gastroenterology, gynaecology and cardiology.
Solvay is a research based company and invests 17% of its annual sales, more than the industrial average, into research and development of innovative products.
R & D Centres are located in Hannover (Germany), Paris (France), Weesp (The Netherlands), Marietta, GA (USA) and Tokyo (Japan) with over 1,100 people working in this area.
Solvay reputation for innovative products has already made its mark in pyschiatry with the development of fluvoxamine (Luvox, Fevarin, Dumirox), the world's first selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Flesinoxan for the treatment of depression and anxiety is in development.
With the development of the new antihypertensive moxonidine (Physiotens, Normotens, Moxol), an imidazoline type 1 receptor antagonist, Solvay has introduced an innovative therapeutic approach in cardiology.
