Sonic Rivals is a new game in the Sonic series, being created by Death, Jr. developers Backbone Entertainment exclusively for the PlayStation Portable. This is the first Sonic game to be developed by a Canadian company.

It features 2.5D gameplay, as players scramble to reach the end of a level before the other players do (whether they are computer-controlled or live opponents). Presumably, it otherwise plays very much like the older titles in the series.

Sonic Rivals starts as a competition between Sonic and Knuckles, but expands as further rivals get added to the mix.

[edit] Characters

[edit] Playable Characters

  • Sonic the Hedgehog: The fastest thing alive. He’s defeated Dr. Eggman to save the world numerous times, but in his latest adventure, Sonic discovers that his best friends Tails and Amy have been mysteriously turned into cards. Now’s it’s a race to find that evil Dr. Eggman and free his friends!

Sonic's special ability is Sonic Boom, which greatly increases his speed temporarily. Also, Sonic is able to fly for a brief moment upon activating this ability. [1]

  • Knuckles the Echidna: Having lived his whole life on Angel Island, Knuckles' existence is spent guarding the Master Emerald. He’s a wild, strong, tough, and all-around stubborn kind of guy and one may say, a rival to Sonic, perhaps due to Knuckles' longing to have a life of freedom like the hedgehog's. He must now race to find the Master Emerald that has mysteriously been turned into a card by Dr. Eggman!

Knuckles' special ability is Hammer Punch, which he can use to stun surrounding rivals. [2]

  • Shadow the Hedgehog: A black hedgehog that looks like Sonic. He was created as the ultimate life-form by Professor Gerald Robotnik, the greatest scientific genius of his time. Shadow has the power to use the Chaos Emeralds to perform “Chaos Control,” enabling him to manipulate time and space. Summoned to a strange land by Dr. Eggman via a cryptic transmission asking for his aid, Shadow encounters something strange and now it’s a race to find Eggman to uncover the truth!

Shadow's special ability is Chaos Control, which he can use to slow down his opponents. [3]

  • Silver the Hedgehog: A mysterious young white hedgehog, equipped with psychic powers that allow him to propel items through the air with great force, is transported from somewhere. The only thing Silver really knows is that he is searching for someone…but for whom and more importantly why? Shrouded in mystery, Silver begins to run after Dr. Eggman to find the clues that will unlock his quest.

Silver's special abilities involve using his ESP to confuse surrounding opponents. In the game, Silver's ability allows him to mix the controls of the enemy. [4]

  • Metal Sonic: Confirmed at a recent gaming expo and, earlier, by a fan site. After his ordeal in Heroes, Metal has copied all of the data from the cast and serves to impede the characters' plans to stop Eggman Nega. He appears to be working with Eggman Nega for unknown reasons, but a major reason could be their hatred for Eggman. He is available for play after collecting the Metal Madness, Metal Overlord, and Neo Metal Sonic cards. <ref>http://www.gamespot.com/psp/driving/sonicrivals/screenindex.html?sid=6160074</ref>

Metal Sonic's special ability is the ability to copy the attacks of others, similar to that of Emerl from Sonic Battle, and also reminiscent of his play style in Sonic the Fighters, wherein he could use all the other characters' special attacks.

[edit] Supporting Characters

Miles "Tails" Prower: Upon journeying to Onyx Island with Sonic, Tails is turned into a card by Dr. Eggman's camera as proof to Sonic that he indeed has the power to do so. It's now up to Sonic to save both him, and Amy, who has also been turned into a card.

Amy Rose: The first to be turned into a card by Dr. Eggman's camera, Sonic and Tails journey to Onyx Island to discover this shocking truth. After Tails himself gets turned into a card, Sonic sets out to save them both.

Rouge the Bat: After discovering the truth about "Dr. Eggman", Rouge goes missing but it is later revealed that she was turned into a card! Shadow sets out to save Rouge whilst trying to figure out what Rouge had discovered.

[edit] Villains

Dr. Eggman: The villainous Dr. Eggman returns again with yet another scheming plot that may give Sonic and the others a run for their money.

Eggman Nega: As it turns out, Eggman Nega is the mastermind of the game who hails from the future. Masquerading as Dr. Eggman in the past, he uses a special camera to turn everyone into cards on Onyx Island, an island he brought along with him from the future. His master plan is to change his destiny by turning the whole planet into a card that he can control. It is revealed that he is a descendant of Eggman.

[edit] Unlockable Costumes

Collecting all of a character's cards will unlock outfits related to that character. For example, collecting all of Amy's cards unlocks a pink track suit that can be equipped into one of the rivals (although this appears to be missing in the final version of the game for some reason). [24] Examples of some unlockable costumes are listed below:

Each character has a total of 3 unlockable costumes:

  • Sonic: Leather, Ice, Black Tie
  • Knuckles: Leather, Armor, Eggman
  • Shadow: Leather, Flame, 80's
  • Silver: Leather, Lightning, Christmas
  • Metal Sonic: Leather, Circuits, Jester

It has been revealed and proven that the Leather Costumes slightly affect gameplay in terms of the speed in which the characters travel. [citation needed] It is unknown, however, if, and how, the other costumes affect gameplay in any way.

[edit] Features

Some details about this game include:

  • There are 7 types of power-ups, fire, ice, mine, illusion, wind, ring magnet, and star. <ref>http://www.gamespot.com/psp/driving/sonicrivals/news.html?sid=6160578&tag=gumballs;img;1</ref>The effects of each one are different for each character, though generally have similar outcomes. The Fire power-up gives the character a fire attack, the Ice power-up gives the character an ice attack, the Speed power-up gives the character a speed power-up, and the Star power-up gives the character a special attack specific to that character.
  • The game will feature a revamped power-up system, including both offensive and defensive abilities.
  • Singleplayer consists of a Story Mode, in which each of the four playable characters have separate storylines, and must race each other to the finish line in each stage in order to thwart Doctor Eggman's various schemes.
  • Multiplayer mode is played Adhoc, and players can customize their racers using collectable cards won in Singleplayer, trade cards with friends, and wager cards on races.
  • Characters collect stars on the track used to level-up and attack opponents when enough stars have been acquired.
  • Boss battles at the end of levels will require you to, not only defeat the boss, but also prevent your opponents from defeating it before you [25]
  • Different characters have different routes on the various tracks.
  • Recent screen shots have shown that badniks will be featured as enemies, though some will be similar to those of Sonic Heroes.

[edit] Gameplay

Sonic Rivals consists of many different modes: Single Player Mode consists of Story Mode, Challenge Mode, and, Cup Circuit. Wireless Play Mode will have you participating in Multiplayer games and races whereby players can wager cards or just race for fun. [26] [27]. The game's loading screens will give you tips on using each character to your advantage when racing. Although it was assumed that a Boss Attack mode will be featured in the game, these challenges have been implemented into Challenge Mode. [28]

Performing objectives throughout the game will give you collectable cards. Such tasks may include, getting a certain number of rings, hitting Dr. Robotnik a certain number of times, and getting to the goal within a certain amount of time.

[edit] Courses

The game contains six zones, [29] each with three respective acts, the third being a boss battle. The same source states on the Game Info page that there are 17 stages per character, with each stage featuring two acts and a boss, with the exception of Sky Park which does not feature a boss stage. The stage names are as follows:

[edit] Forest Falls

A strange forest with terrain somewhat resembling Green Hill on South Island. This forest contains many waterfalls, and rivers that flow through it. This is the first level, previously shown at E3. Early concept art gives the name Waterfall Forest, but was apparently changed in the final version of the game. Waterfall Forest Concept Art 3

[edit] Colosseum Highway

A desert ruin. Confirmed by a recent gameplay movie on IGN, at the end of the course is a catapult that will send you hurtling to the goal, which is reminiscent of the Sand Ruins stage from Sonic Riders. In addition, there are numerous loops throughout the stage, but, otherwise, not much else is known about this track. [30] [31]

[edit] Sky Park

A carnival level. First seen in the Leipzig Game Convention trailer.[32] [33] Carnival-like attractions appear throughout the stage to help you reach the goal; most predominantly, Roller Coasters.

[edit] Crystal Mountain

An icy level. First seen in the Leipzig Game Convention trailer, this course appears to have many traps, one of which is a pit whereby opponents can push a boulder over any rival who happens to fall in it. Much like the catapult on the Coliseum Highway course, this stage features a bobsled you can temporarily use to proceed at a certain point in the stage.[34] [35] Not much else is known about it at this time.

[edit] Death Yard

A level filled with machinery, fans and other varia. [36][37] First seen in the Leipzig Game Convention trailer.[38] Not much is known about it at this time. First screenshots reveal Metal Sonic's appearance in this stage. The name is thought to be an allusion to the "Spring Yard" stage from a past Sonic game.

[edit] Meteor Base

An Eggman base hidden within an asteroid field. Holds Eggman's fiercest creations as well as hot lava; traps and mines abound in this stage. It bears a small resemblance to the Meteor Herd stage, from Sonic Adventure 2. [39][40][41]

[edit] Cards

Sonic Rivals features an extensive card system that spans a total of 150 cards. For a complete list and description of all the cards featured in Sonic Rivals, please refer to the article below.

[edit] Reception

[edit] Critics

IGN has, so far, been the only source to rate the game, with the exception of Games Master UK [42]. IGN rated the game a 7.5 out of 10, highlighting its replay value, its graphics, as well as its entertaining stages. On average, this game has received a 72% by all of the critic sites, which was only five, according to Gamerankings. [43]

[edit] Public Reception

Several people were at first, doubting this game very much, not even giving it a chance. Some were even angry that a DS version wasn't released. However, fans of the Sonic-base universe were very pleased with what the game had to offer when it came out. In fact, the comment was made that Sonic Rivals may have been the "best" of the Sonic games released for the 2006 year. [44] This statement plays true, also, for other Sonic games released during the 2006 year were not rated or recieved as well as Sonic Rivals was. [citation needed]

[edit] Trivia

  • For the most part, the entire soundtrack of the game is being developed by Remix Factory. However, it has also been confirmed that Jun Senoue, though not directly working on the music of the game, will also be developing a few tracks for it.
